Today guest speaker Jan Zwart, former MAF pilot, will give his testimony.
Jan Zwart was born and raised in Zaandam. When he was eight years old he almost drowned in the Zaan river. This incident is described in his book “the skipper and the father. After working at KLM for a period of time, he took a three-year course in mission and cross cultural work.
From 1975 to 1978 he attended professional flight training. During that time he and others did the ground work that led to the establishment of MAF Netherlands Foundation in 1978. Shortly thereafter, he and his wife Roberta were deployed to Colombia. After a tumultuous and exciting period of flying at that time, they and their family, after a short leave in the Netherlands, went on to Ecuador. There they laid the groundwork for the national MAF Ecuador. Having worked there until 1994, they returned to the Netherlands for good. They founded the Dutch branch of Stichting Frontiers, which they led until 2015 and later set up cross cultural training teams in various places in the Netherlands, including Utrecht where they live until now. After his retirement, for the celebration of forty years of MAF-Netherlands, he wrote a book about his adventures in South America, where he made more than 13,000 flights with more than 41,000 passengers.
This book describes, among other things, his flying period during the time of Pablo Escobar and later flight operations from the highest MAF base in the world in Quito Ecuador.
